Brooms

A series of ink drawings, one stroke movements.

Brooms, aside from their utilitarian function in our everyday life, have taken a life of their own as a metaphorical tool in several cultures. They are associated with gravity defiance (and the magical powers of witchcraft). They play a role in social segregation (African-American couples who enslaved and banned from getting married in the church, would jump over a broom to consummate matrimony, the broom acting as a figurative church door). Brooms are sometimes a symbol of victory in military crusades, and have even entered the arena of “sport” (as seen in the fictional Harry Potter game of “Quiddich”). Brooms also serve numerous expressions of religious beliefs around the world.

In the Dominican Republic, my country of origin, certain popular religious traditions use a broom for the expulsion of negative spirits in a house by placing the broom upside down behind an open door. This method is also believed to send away unwelcome visitors to a home. Additionally, sweeping a broom on an aggravated belly is thought serve as a healing tool for those with severe stomachache after excessive eating (Emparche).
